Undefeated fighter plans to get married, then fight on the same day
Louisiana fighter Kurt Holobaugh has had a very hot start to his mixed martial arts career. He has rattled off eight straight wins with seven professional fights and one amateur. To keep his hot streak going, Holobaugh will fight at Fight Force International's event in Biloxi, Miss., on Saturday.
Earlier that day, he has a little bit of business to take care of. He is going to get married on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. The best part is that it was her idea.
"It was my wife's idea," Holobaugh told MMA Fighting. "Biloxi's a pretty city and she's a fan of the beach, so we're going to have a minister do a ceremony there. When we get home, we'll do a big reception and have family and team members down here. It should be good, it will be good to come home married and with a victory and celebrate."
Holobaugh is very smart to marry this woman. For the fighters out there, if you find a partner who shares your love of the sport so much that the wedding and a fight can fall on the same day, you lock it down.

Mac Taylor, California's prop master
Whoever it was who coined "Lies, damn lies and statistics" didn't trust numbers. You won't find Mac Taylor subscribing to that. He's the state legislative analyst; his name is there in your ballot pamphlet as the source of independent information about ballot measures and their potential cost to taxpayers. He's had the top job in that office for four years, but the California native joined the effort, fresh from Princeton with a master's degree in public affairs, the same year Jerry Brown was elected governor — the first time. He presides over the fiscal Google of Sacramento, a calm think tank in the shark tank of the Legislature's partisan passions.

Are Obama and Romney?s Mobile Apps Violating Your Privacy?
If you've installed either Barack Obama or Mitt Romney's mobile apps, you've also given either campaign permission to take a wealth of personal information from your device.
Both apps can collect your device's IP address, type (Android or iOS), and the location of your device -- and therefore, by extension, the location of you.
Why do the candidates' apps need to know where you are? Two reasons. Both show you campaign events and offices near you. The Obama app, though, does something the Romney app doesn't: It has a built-in location-based feature that identifies nearby Obama supporters, allowing you to knock on their door to promote the candidate (that feature alone set off priva…

Nook HD review: a high-def tablet with the heart of a reader
Barnes & Noble knows where it stands in the tablet race. Sure, the company has been plugging away at the space since the day the Nook Color made its transformation into a full-fledged tablet, but the Nook, it seems, is rarely mentioned in the same breath as the Kindle Fire or Nexus 7, when discussing low-cost tablets. As such, the company seems to rarely mention its devices without discussing the competition -- Amazon in particular. In fact, at the launch event for the Nook HD and HD+, reps trotted out Kindle Fire HDs at every possible opportunity.
Seeing the two devices side by side, there's no question that Nook trumps the Fire in a number of categories, and the bookseller has gone a ways toward making the Nook HD stand out in a field full of bigger players. For one thing, the device is far more focused on the reading experience than the competition, a fact reflected in both hardware and UI decisions. The company has also taken a more aggressive approach toward marketing the device toward families. The question, then, is whether these features are enough to capture marketshare from the more prominent devices. See how the Nook HD stacks up after the break.

COLOGNE -- Digital entertainment technology company Rovi has rolled out connected TV ad units in Germany on TVs from Samsung, Panasonic and Toshiba, says Jeff Siegel, Senior VP Worldwide Advertising at Rovi. Beet.TV's correspondent Ashley Swartz caught up with Siegel in this video interview taped at the DMEXCO conference for a discussion on connected TV advertising in Europe. Rovi powers about 23 different ad units for connected TVs, many of which live around apps, he says. The connection rates are higher in Western Europe than in the United States, Siegel tells Beet.TV. The connection rates in the US are around 25% to 30%, but in Germany and Western Europe the connection rates are closer to 67% to 68%, driven by gaming consoles, he says. Rovi's field research has indicated that consumers are using music, film and movie apps on their smart TVs as well as for TV watching. In addition to the pre-installed TV apps, most connected TV users in Germany download about 6 additional apps, according to Rovi's research. That's promising for marketers because apps are one of the places on connected TVs where ads are running. In general, connected TV users are among the most highly engaged with ads.Siegel adds that Rovi has seen a 30% to 40% increase in impressions on connected TVs worldwide so far this year. "I'm encouraged by that," Siegel says.

Official: Chevy Camaro Hot Wheels Edition is the real deal, for SEMA debut
Filed under: Concept Cars, SEMA Show, Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Chevrolet, Toys/Games, Design/Style
Do you remember your favorite Hot Wheels diecast of your youth? Can you imagine how cool it would be if that scale model were a full-size car? Well, apparently the folks at Chevrolet have teamed up with Hot Wheels to create a new Camaro Hot Wheels Edition for 2013, and it's the stuff of childhood dreams. This scale-inspired Camaro is set about to head into production after its debut at the SEMA show in Las Vegas later this week.
As Chevrolet's Vice President of Marketing, Chris Perry, notes: "Millions of us grew up playing with Hot Wheels. Offering a special production model of the Camaro Hot Wheels is an opportunity to bring those memories to life, for kids of all ages."
The special edition package will be available limited numbers in both coupe and convertible bodystyles. Available trims include 2LT (V6), and 2SS (V8), and the Hot Wheels Edition combines elements of ZL1 styling with an eye-catching Kinetic Blue paint job. Visual updates include ground effects, front splitter, ZL1 front upper grille and ZL1 rear spoiler (for coupe models only). Upgrades also include black 21-inch wheels with redline accents like Hot Wheels of yore. The hood features a matte hood stripe and the obligatory Hot Wheels logos throughout.
One of the first 16 Hot Wheels issued was a 1:64-scale Custom Camaro toy from 1968. It is unsurprisingly now one of the most valuable diecast cars among collectors.
General Motors isn't toying when it comes to pricing, however - the Hot Wheels Edition package will be available in early 2013 for $6,995 on top of the price of a standard 2LT or 2SS Camaro. Check out more on this fetching limited edition Camaro in the press release below.

Windows Phone 8 gets Pandora Radio, Cut the Rope, Urbanspoon and more (update: full list)
Microsoft knows that Windows Phone 8 is only as successful as its apps. To that end, it's blowing the doors open in terms of major app support. It's not only promising a Windows Phone version of Pandora Radio for early 2013, it's offering ad-free listening for the first year. How's that for strong out-of-the-box content? On top of this, Microsoft is vowing a slew of new apps and games that had previously only been available in the Android or iOS camps, including Asphalt 7, Cut the Rope, Temple Run, Urbanspoon and Where's My Water. By the time the expansion is done, Microsoft hopes to have 46 out of the 50 most popular apps onboard, making any platform switch that much gentler. Instagram is a notable omission -- still, it's a big leap in terms of equality.
Update: If you need even more detail, Microsoft has posted a wider list of new apps as part of its official Windows Phone 8 launch post. If that's not enough, you can catch a video overview of the platform after the break.

Group M's Xaxis Creates Private Exchanges for Big Brands
GroupM's audience buying unit Xaxis is able to create private exchanges online for premium publishers, says Christina Beaumier, VP of Global Client Development in this interview with Beet.TV Beet.TV contributor Ashley Swartz interviewed Beaumier about the inner workings of audience buying in this fashion at the recent Beet.TV Leadership Summit on Digital Video Advertising in an RTB World. "We go to our biggest advertisers and collect all of their spend and then go to to publishers that otherwise don't put their inventory on an exchange, and that allows us to do programmatic buying on those exchanges," she explains to Beet.TV in this interview. That approach gives brands access to premium inventory but with the benefits of audience buying, she says. "They're only delivering impressions and brand messages against the users who matter and they're doing it in a very efficient way." The benefit to publishers lies in transparency and a controlled manner of making their inventory accessible via an open real-time buying marketplace, she says. In some markets, more than 50% of the inventory available through this premium marketplace is video. This Beet event took place at the Manhattan offices of GroupM and was presented by TubeMogul. Whose bright idea? Neon Museum to hit Vegas
by Hiufu Wong
Flashy casinos, jackpots and showgirls; the images of Las Vegas that come to mind have one thing in common -- they are invariably lit by the hundreds of neon signs that make the city glow.
Las Vegas, a beacon to gamblers in the Nevada desert, will become even brighter when the Neon Museum opens on October 27.
Home to more than 150 neon signs dating from the 1930s to today, it took Bill Marion, the chair of the Neon Museum, 15 years to collect and plan the exhibition.
"The signs are a visual history of Las Vegas," says Marion. "Each sign has a unique story behind it -- about casino bosses and owners who built the city, about the mob figures who associated with them, about the entertainers who used to perform here."
The museum also works with the City of Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Signs Project, to restore and install vintage signs along Las Vegas Boulevard between Sahara and Washington Avenues.

UFC on FX 5 will answer these questions
The UFC heads to the Land of Lakes on Friday night for a card on FX. These are the big questions that will be answered by the time the fights are over.
Can Antonio Silva get back on track? In his last two bouts, "Bigfoot" has been knocked out twice. Both were in the first round, and both were to American Kickboxing Academy-trained fighters with outstanding wrestling backgrounds. On Friday, he will take on the undefeated Travis Browne. Is this the fight Silva needs to stop his losing skid?
Will Jay Hieron's long career finally have a UFC win? Hieron has a record of 23-5, and has fought in the UFC twice. His first fight in the Octagon was at UFC 48 against some up-and-comer named Georges St-Pierre, who knocked Hieron out in the first round. A year later, he fought Jonathan Goulet at Ultimate Fight Night 2 and lost because of a cut. Seven years later and after stops in the IFL, Strikeforce and Bellator, Hieron is back for a bout with Jake Ellenberger. It's not an easy bout. Will he get the win?
Who will be the next flyweight title challenger? Actually, it's who will be the first flyweight challenger, since Demetrious Johnson is the first owner of the belt. The title shot will go to either "The Ultimate Fighter" winner John Dodson, or Jussier Formiga, who is on five-fight win streak and is making his UFC debut.
Have any predictions for the fights? Speak up in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

Dennis Hallman, UFC on FX?s ?Browne vs. Bigfoot?, Eddie Alvarez: The Morning News Roundup 10.5.12
To quote DJ Lance Rock of Yo Gabba Gabba!: "Hello, friends!" Since Maggie Hendricks is off to the faraway kingdom of Canada for a blogger conference, I will be manning the wheel at CAGEWRITER today. And what a day it shall be! An installment of the UFC on FX is tonight, as is the opening round of Bellator's latest heavyweight tournament, plus there are weigh-ins for the all-female show Invicta FC (which will be broadcast for free on the Internet tomorrow night). That's a lot of MMA right there. So much so, in fact, that I'm going to give you a news roundup chock full of relevant tidbits ? you know, as like hors d'oeuvre or an appetizer or something ? to get you ready for tonight's selection of entrees.
- Longtime UFC fighter Dennis Hallman was supposed to fight Thiago Tavares in a lightweight bout scheduled for the Fuel TV-portion of tonight's UFC, but the fatty from Olympia, WA, failed to make weight. The good news is both fighters were paid their "show" and "win" money; the bad news is that Hallman claimed personal problems at home led to this unfortunate turn of events, and he got the axe. Oh well. The dude's fought in the Octagon nine times in a career that began in 1996. I'd say he's accomplished a lot and gone as far as he's going to go, fighting-wise. Let him eat those cheeseburgers with impunity.

- Everyone else on the UFC on FX: "Browne vs. Bigfoot" card made weight. Here's video. Everyone made weight for Bellator tonight, too.

- MMAFighting scribe and ace basketball player Mike Chiappetta wrote this excellent piece on the likelihood of former lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez leaving Bellator. How likely is it? Remember in The Matrix when Agent Smith had Neo in a headlock on the subway tracks, and as the two stared into the lights of an approaching train, Agent Smith said, "Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability." ? remember that? Well, think of the Octagon as the train.

- Urijah Faber would be down to fight Michael Bisping. In other news, did you know that the topic "Cannabis in California" has its own Wikipedia page? Man, that's crazy. Wikipedia will riff about anything.

- Seminal TUF runner-up Stephan Bonnar says "all the stars are aligning and I could shock the world" in regards to his upcoming bout against UFC superstar Anderson Silva at UFC 153 next weekend. Hey, this Wiki page on the "Crack Epidemic" is fascinating. Crack kills, folks. Crack kills.

- Want someone to root for at tomorrow night's Invicta FC? Root for the veteran Tara LaRosa.

That's all for now. In case y'all forgot, this is me on Twitter and this is my blog.
