You knew this would happen. FOX has
filed a lawsuit against Dish Network over its new "Auto Hop" commercial skipping technology. Subscribers with the Hopper DVR can record four broadcast networks simultaneously -- called "Primetime Anytime" -- and then play back any show minus the commercials. Essentially, it converts TV's biggest shows into commercial-free, on-demand playback.

There really isn’t much support behind the network’s arguments. Advertising is a big way for them to make money and get the word out on new things, but all that Auto Hop is doing is making it easier for people to do what they’ve been doing for years. I use Auto Hop on my receiver when I watch PrimeTime Anytime recordings because I always see the same ads during the daytime and I’d rather not watch them again. One of my Dish co-workers showed me that Auto Hop is something that must be enabled by me in order to work. If I want to see the commercials, I can just rewind the program. Dish simply built upon the usability of the DVR, and I love the improvement.
